CASE
âMorninâ, Miss Thelma, youâre lookinâ lovely today.â She waves me off as she hustles across her front lawn to greet me.
âI know what youâre doinâ, Case.â She smiles devilishly. âAnd I have to say I approve.â
Keeping my expression as neutral as possible, I ask the question I know Iâm about to regret. âAnd what is that exactly?â
âAll those videos of Sorren.â She winks and my stomach plummets faster than apple pie in a truck bed.
âUmmâ¦â Iâm usually a much better liar when the occasion calls for it, but of all people I thought might discover the account, Miss Thelma wasnât in the top twenty.
Huge oversight.
My phone dings in my pocket as she puts her own in her gardening apron. âI just sent you a couple of the videos I have of him around town. Figured you might need a fresh perspective.â
I pull my phone out and sure as shit thereâs, like, five videos of Sorren around Clementine Creek just being himself. I pick my favorite and send it to Otto to upload.
âI even tried one of those slow motion ones. Man certainly knows how to work a camera.â
âI canât with you.â I laugh and she scoffs.
âIâm old, not dead. Itâs my God-given right to be able to admire men who arenât interested in takinâ me to the early bird special and needinâ a little help in the bedroom department if you know what I mean.â She raises an eyebrow and I chuckle.
âYou saucy minx.â She blushes and I hand her the flowers Iâm still holding. âIâm the best looking though, right? Of all those young strapping men youâre ogling?â
âYouâd like that, wouldnât you?â She chuckles.
âI never turn down an ego boost.â
âI heard that about you.â I snort and sheâs grinninâ like a loon because even if Iâm not her favoriteâwhich I totally amâsheâs definitely mine. âAnd I heard I donât have to keep sending ladies to your doorstep. Thank the good Lord.â
âTo be clear,â I say pointedly, âyou didnât have to do that at all.â
âWhat kind of busybody would I be if I didnât meddle at least a little bit now and then?â
âThe kind that wasnât tryinâ to give me gray hairs.â
She fluffs her hair to highlight her own matured look and cocks an eyebrow. âYouâll look mighty handsome as a silver fox.â
âObviously,â I agree, âbut also letâs put that off for a good fifteen maybe twenty years, okay?â
âYouâre such a spoilsport.â She huffs but itâs all in jest.
Leaning forward, I kiss her cheek. âYou have a good day, Miss Thelma.â
âSame to you, Case, same to you.â
Iâm halfway to my truck when I call back, âIâm tellinâ everyone Iâm the best looking and your favorite.â She cackles and waves the flowers at me before turning to go inside.
My phone buzzes in my hand, and I look down expecting to see a message from Otto but itâs from Hannah.
